Tenor Funk Improvisation Series 2 - Lesson 1

Lesson one of Tenor Funk Improvisation Series 2 is called Call and Response. James begins by briefly recapping some of the basic concepts you would have already covered in series 1, before moving straight into how you would use call and response using the minor pentatonic and blues scales to create funky licks. Following a walkthrough of a number of different licks and notes, the backing track is played for James to demonstrate funky call and response licks in real time for you to play along with if you wish.

Tenor Funk Improvisation Series 2 - Lesson 2

Lesson two looks at the major pentatonic scale, or the gospel scale as James likes to call it. James opens with a brief explanation of the scale before playing through all the notes on the scale as well as introducing some funky licks. This lesson features a great explanation on how to play slowly and keep your licks simple to create an amazing sound, before moving onto James playing the different notes with the backing track and explaining where you can fit these into your own funky licks on your tenor sax.

Lesson three is called Combining the Major and Minor Pentatonics. To start, James explains how he likes to use both to create an incredible sound before the backing track goes straight on. Before playing, James talks you through how he's going to play before giving a demonstration, allowing you to get the beat of the backing track while playing along with James in combining the major and minor pentatonic scales.

In lesson four you will move onto looking at how to use arpeggios in your funk improvisation. This is a fantastic lesson where you'll be playing almost from start to finish. James begins by talking through why arpeggios are worth having under your fingers for producing your own improvised funk licks. Then follows a short explanation of each note and a demonstration of how to play them, before the backing track is played and you get to try them out for yourself, complete with guidance on which notes to play and timings from James.

In lesson five, called Building Solos, James will take you through a number of different concepts and ideas that will help you to build brilliantly structured solos, whether you want to practice a solo you can call upon at all times or simply want to be comfortable whenever you get the opportunity to improvise. There's a lot of great tips from James in this lesson that will help you play some great funky licks and solos. Put the backing track on at the end and play along as James talks you through a structured solo of his own.
