Welcome to the latest instalment of Funk Improvisation from the brilliant James Morton. This 3rd Funk Improvisation Series revisits and continues the techniques and ideas explored in the first two series, while James increases the complexity in this and introduces the three chord live backing track, 'Trifle Funk'. This series concentrates on the Dominant 7th Scale, and how it is properly utilised over this great backing track. James demonstrates a variety of improvisation techniques over the Trifle Funk backing track to provide you with the 'tools' and 'colours' you need to improve your sax improvisation. Enjoy!

James Morton has been playing sax since the age of eight. Funk Improvisation Series 3 - Lesson 1

This first lesson is all about understanding the form of this Trifle Funk backing track. James explains in detail how the chord changes work and demonstrates some pro techniques of how to recognise the chord changes easier. This is an interactive lesson where James explains and demonstrates whilst the backing track is actually playing. This is a great fun way to learn and is perfect for honing your timing and understanding of the music.

Funk Improvisation Series 3 - Lesson 2

This online sax lesson explores and explains the relevant Dominent 7th Scales that apply when playing over this Trifle Funk backing track. James explains and demonstrates these scales in detail, along with explaining which scales fit over the relevant chords within the sequence. This is one of the first steps to improvising over this Trifle Funk backing track and similar chord sequences, and will build on the lessons from Funk Improvisation Series 1 & 2 to give you even more tools for your sax improv. As ever, learning with James is fun, interactive, and easy to follow.

Funk Improvisation Series 3 - Lesson 3

This third lesson looks at the Arpeggios that can be used to improvise over this Trifle Funk backing track. This lesson is designed to help players pick out the chord tones within this sequence. James explains these Arpeggios in detail and demonstrates how you can play them easily within tracks or for your own improvisational solos. This provides an alternative technique to improvising over this Trifle Funk backing track and provides you with more colours to add to your musical paint palette.

Funk Improvisation Series 3 - Lesson 4

In this lesson, James uses the backing track to demonstrate the scales and arpeggios in context. This lesson will help players with making sure that they play the right scales and arpeggios over the right chords which is key to improvising over this sort of chord progression. If you're tempted to skip straight to lesson four then think again, as this is where the difficulty will start to increase. Perfect your scales and arpeggios with James in lessons 1 - 3 before you take on this track here.

Funk Improvisation Series 3 - Lesson 5

James introduces some great improvisation ideas within this lesson and starts to get funky. James again uses the backing track to demonstrate and explain these ideas which puts them into context and helps you relate them to the backing track. This again will help players with their creativity and provide them with further 'colours' and tools to use over this Trifle Funk backing track. As with lesson four, you'll need to be confident when it comes to your timing and technique. If you're not quite there yet, go back to the early lessons to build your Trifle Funk skills and you'll be all set.

In this final lesson James combines the various techniques that have been taught throughout this Funk Improvisation Series 3. James again explains and talks through the improvisations whilst the backing track is playing and demonstrates how all of the techniques and ideas taught in this series seamlessly fit together. This will help players plan their own solos when improvising, and ultimately provide them with the tools to have the most amount of fun when improvising over this Trifle Funk backing track.

Here is a great example solo played by James Morton himself. This solo will give players an overall idea of the different improvisations and notes can be played over this Trifle Funk backing track. The video of James playing the solo features multiple camera angles to help you with your technique and make it easier to find specific notes. We hope this provides inspiration and some ideas to all saxophone players out there, especially if you like to get funky and play around with your sounds. He explains his 'set up' and the advantages and disadvantages of how certain gear may affect your tone and ability to play.
