Funk Licks Series 1 - Lesson 1
In lesson one, James explains the idea behind the use of licks and language in music, before moving straight into the first pro lick in this series. James also emphasises the opportunity to customise these licks yourself by deconstructing them and playing them in your own style or order. Later in the lesson James moves onto a second lick, before ending lesson one of Funk Licks Series 1 playing both of these brilliant licks over the fantastic backing track.
Funk Licks Series 1 - Lesson 2
In lesson two you quickly move into learning another pair of two bar funk saxophone licks. James plays the licks aswell as talking you through them so you get an idea of the beat and timing you're looking for, while also breaking the licks down to show you how you can practice them easily until you have perfected them. This is a fantastic demonstration for both beginners as well as experienced saxophone players, and will help you master every part of every lick before putting it all together. Once again the lesson ends with an opportunity to play these funky licks along with James with the backing track blasting in the background.
Funk Licks Series 1 - Lesson 3
Another two funky licks are headed your way in lesson three, again featuring James playing the licks before running through the structure of each lick verbally to help you nail the timing and tone. James also informs you of the notes you're playing, so whichever way you prefer to learn and remember these licks, we have you covered. James breaks down the phrases into two halves to make it easy for you to master them, and you guessed it, by the end of the lesson you can put on the backing track and get playing along. By now you'll already be starting to improvise yourself and have these amazing pro licks at your command.
Funk Licks Series 1 - Lesson 4
You know the drill by now. Lesson four introduces two more funky licks that may begin to challenge you more than those you've already learnt and hopefully mastered and started to incorporate into your own sax solos. As always James shows you which beat the lick starts with and demonstrates it in full before breaking it down so it is easy to understand. Depending on your ability and confidence with your saxophone you might even be able to play these right away. Check out James' brilliant explanations, then let's put that backing track back on!
Funk Licks Series 1 - Lesson 5
As you approach the end of Funk Licks Series 1 the licks continue to come thick and fast. The first lick in this lesson is one that James calls 'simple and effective,' and with a beat between the two halves of the lick there is plenty of musical licence for playing around with it and making it your own. As has been the theme throughout Funk Licks Series 1, James then moves into a second lick before inviting you to put on the backing track and try these for yourself. By now you'll be combining everything you have learned throughout Funk Licks Series 1 and coming up with your own great sounds.
Funk Licks Series 1 - Lesson 6
Prepare to take things up a level as you learn the final two licks in this series. The first lick is fast and furious and definitely one you'll be looking to make a staple of your own funk improvisations and solos. As has been the case throughout Funk Licks Series 1, James breaks down both licks slowly and verbally to help you understand the structure of each, making it easy for you to play along and learn at your own pace. With all 12 licks from Funk Licks Series 1 under your fingers, it's time to put the backing track on once again and go crazy!

In the Tone and Gear section, you join James as he explains the set up of his instrument as well as the different brands he uses for the different components of his sax. You'll pick up some great tips from James that will help you create your own professional sax sound, and go away with some ideas of what you might need to try. While James will point you in the direction of some great equipment, remember that you'll ultimately find the best set up for yourself by trying different things to learn what you're comfortable with.
