Funk Licks Series 3 - Lesson 1

In the first lesson of Funk Licks Series 3, James is straight into teaching you the first two licks of the series. The first lick is played over the G7 and F7 chords in alto key, and like all the other licks throughout the Funk Licks collection, it sounds incredible over our Trifle Funk backing track. The second lick uses one bar of G7 and one bar of C7. The idea with these two licks is to aim to put them together once you've mastered both, giving you a brilliant four bar funk lick to use within your saxophone solos. To start with, both licks are broken down one bar at a time, meaning you can get them playing easily under your fingers before putting it all together.

Funk Licks Series 3 - Lesson 2

As with lesson one, the two licks featured in this series are played over the G7 and F7 chord, followed by a lick played over the G7 and C7 chords. Once again, when you have mastered these you can put both licks together to create an amazing four bar lick that you can play over our Trifle Funk backing track. As always, James breaks down each lick so you can learn one part at a time. Once you have these licks under your fingers, why not experiment with swapping them around or using them with some of the other great licks you might have picked up from the other funk licks series.

Funk Licks Series 3 - Lesson 3

Lesson three begins with a great tip from James that might help you as you aim to learn all of these brilliant funk licks as well as come up with your own in the future. The licks themselves are over the same chord structure meaning they sound brilliant with the Trifle Funk backing track. Look out for some extra tips in this lesson to help you get more from your licks. Once again these two licks are designed to be put together, giving you one brilliant lick to play with Trifle Funk.

Funk Licks Series 3 - Lesson 4

Your first lick in lesson four uses arpeggios. If you're unfamiliar with arpeggios we recommend downloading James Morton's Funk Improvisation Series 3 where you will learn what these are and how to use them in your music. The lesson progresses following the format you'll now be familiar with, learning your two new licks that you can put together to play over the Trifle Funk backing track. Take your time to learn both of these licks and put them together to play along with James at the end.

Medium
Funk Licks Series 3 - Lesson 5

James kicks off lesson five with some tips around rhythmic development of your music and how to get used to syncopation when you're playing either alone or in a group. Ideal tips for playing funk licks but useful if you also enjoy playing other music genres on your saxophone. James is then right into teaching you the next two brilliant licks, deconstructing them as usual to help you learn them and make the most of them in your own music. The licks in this lesson are over the same chord structure but are slightly different in structure themselves to the others in this series, so be sure to watch this one to the end.

Funk Licks Series 3 - Lesson 6

The final lesson of Funk Licks Series 3 again looks at the concept of syncopation. While these might be easy licks to get under your fingers when we're just thinking about the notes, playing them within the rhythm might be more challenging, so be sure to take your time to master them! The final two licks of this series will leave you armed with a wide range of improvisation options for playing over the Trifle Funk backing track, while James refers to some of the elements from Funk Improvisation Series 3 to help you master these. A fun and exciting end to Funk Licks Series 3, another brilliant collection of online saxophone lessons.
