Funk Licks Series 4 - Lesson 1

James introduces Funk Licks Series 4 by talking through some of the areas you'll be looking at in this collection of saxophone lessons. You'll be playing in the A concert key, which is F sharp on an alto sax. Although a difficult key to play on saxophone, due to its popularity with guitarists and vocalists it's an essential to learn if you're looking to play in a band. James then moves straight into teaching you the first two licks from this series, before putting on the backing track at the end of the lesson so you can play along with him.

Funk Licks Series 4 - Lesson 2

Two more great funk licks are headed your way in this lesson, broken down again to help you learn the phrase in full. The licks you'll learn here have a real James Brown feel to it and utilise call and response techniques, which if you haven't covered yet you can learn in our Funk Improvisation collection. This is a brilliant lick to learn and you'll feel great when you're playing it. Get this lick under your fingers and get the backing track turned up loud so you can play along with James.

Funk Licks Series 4 - Lesson 3

The next lick in this series has a very soulful, smooth, and melodic feel to it and is another one that feels great to play once it's under your fingers. James revisits a great tip from Funk Licks Series 3 to help you visualise how you're going to play each lick. Then you're straight into playing the individual notes and getting to grips with the lick itself. James breaks down all the individual notes so you can master this lick, before putting on the backing track and playing along with James.

Funk Licks Series 4 - Lesson 4

In lesson four James ups the ante with a lick that has more to it than those you've previously learnt. This is a great lick that blends several elements of playing the saxophone and is sure to add some colour to your own personal repertoire. James slows this lick right down to help you get to grips with it and play it to perfection. As well as learning this great lick you'll pick up some excellent pro tips from James that will help you get more from your playing. Once you've mastered this lick, get the backing track on or start jamming with your friends.

Funk Licks Series 4 - Lesson 5

Lesson five brings you a somewhat unique lick in that you're going to learn to play it in two octaves. James begins by explaining why this isn't possible with all the licks you have learnt throughout the Funk Licks collection, Here, you will start with the lower octave and move onto the higher octave, and again you'll have plenty of time to deconstruct, slow down, and master this lick before putting it all together and playing along with the backing track.

Funk Licks Series 4 - Lesson 6

The final lick is funky, flashy, and is played over an octave and a half, starting high and ending low, taking in notes between C sharp and E. James introduces the lick and talks through the pentatonic pattern he uses, before moving into the lesson and breaking down this great lick for you to get it under your fingers with ease. Once you've got this lick down to a tee, it's time to move onto playing the backing track while you play along with this and every other lick featured in Funk Licks Series 4.

Funk Licks Series 4 - Example Solo

In this Example Solo, play along with James Morton as he goes through a wide range of great sounding licks and phrases. Pick up some ideas of your own, copy what James does, or even decide to play along with him. This is a great video for getting inspired with ideas from a professional musician and for finding some great licks to put into your own improvisations and solos.

Funk Licks Series 4 - Tone and Gear

In this Tone and Gear video, join James as he talks through his instrument set-up including the brand of saxophone he uses, as well as tips for finding a suitable mouthpiece and reed set-up. While it is great to learn about how to set up your instrument from a professional musician, remember that your instrument set-up is individual to you. Take James' tips on board and use them when thinking about how you use your own saxophone, rather than copying James' set up that might not necessarily work for you.
