Major 2,5,1's Series 3 - Lesson 1
In this first lesson introduces you to the melodic minor scale and explains the notes that make up this scale. The scales that James teaches directly relate to the chord sequence within the backing track to enable you to be able to improvise over the track. Learning and understanding the scales are essential for improvisation. It is not always obvious what scales are played over what chords. James as always does a great job of making it easy to understand and easy to learn. Get these scales "under your fingers".
Major 2,5,1's Series 3 - Lesson 2
In this second lesson James takes a similar approach to his other Series by teaching the arpeggios that relate to this melodic minor scale. This lesson however is slightly different as James also decides to add 9th's. The arpeggios allow for a vertical approach to playing instead of just playing scales. Again the first 'port of call' is knowing these arpeggios and being able to call on them at will. Unfortunately there are no short cuts other than learning them and getting them under your fingers. This is the lesson for this.
Major 2,5,1's Series 3 - Lesson 3
This lesson is putting into practice what you have learned in the previous 2 lessons. This lesson will really show whether you have learned your scales and arpeggios well enough. This is a lesson where James now uses the backing track interactively to encourage you to play the scales and arpeggios in the right place at the right time. This also brings your ear training from earlier Series into play and will test your ability as to whether you fully understand the form of the song and recognise the chord changes. Test your skills and ability.
Major 2,5,1's Series 3 - Lesson 4
In this lesson James takes you into really cool tension and release territory. This is predominantly used over the dominant 7th chord. Having the ability to use this concept will make your solos sound really cool. James teaches you the relevant arpeggios that will expand your knowledge and take your improvising to the next level. James demonstrates the arpeggios slowly and accurately making them as easy as possible for you to learn and get under your fingers. This is really cool stuff.
Major 2,5,1's Series 3 - Lesson 5
In this lesson James concentrates on the D7 Flat 9 and essentially the concept of tension and release. Tension and release creates a natural dynamic for the listener and will ultimately make your solos sound more professional if used correctly. This is an interactive lesson where the backing track is playing and James demonstrates and talks to explain the D7 Flat 9 technique. This is a great addition to what you have already learned to make your solos sound just that bit more interesting and professional.
Major 2,5,1's Series 3 - Lesson 6
As the previous Series this final lesson is all about combining the things you have learned in the Series and putting them together in context. A good improvised solo is all about combining various concepts and techniques in order to evoke feeling within the listener. In this final lessons James goes about showing you how he might 'think about' constructing a solo utilising all the concepts within this Series. This lesson is again designed to be interactive and fun. With what you have learned in all 3 Series your solos should now be nicely taking shape and sounding more professional by the day.

Remember that although this is the set up that James uses to great effect, you will have a set up and perhaps particular saxophone, mouthpiece, and reed brands that work for you.
