Welcome to James Morton's Minor 2,5,1's Series 3. This series of saxophone lessons follows on from Minor 2,5,1's Series 1 & 2, and takes a slightly different approach to learning by introducing the Modal Approach to playing Minor 2,5,1's. James spends a lot of this series demystifying some of the more difficult sounding aspects of playing in certain styles and applying specific modes, breaking everything down to make it simple for you to learn and play effectively. Minor 2,5,1's Series 3 will leave you all set to play some incredible sounds and create your own amazing saxophone improvisations.
James Morton has been playing sax since the age of eight. Now one of the most exciting jazz artists on the European music scene, James now plays solo gigs as well as with groups, including a James Brown tribute alongside Pee Wee Ellis, and another alongside Andy Sheppard. James has also worked with Pendulum and Kasabian, among other popular contemporary artists, and is a great tutor for anyone looking to bring edge and excitement to their own sax playing.
Lesson one of Minor 2,5,1's Series 3 looks at Modal Scales. James begins by explaining what you'll learn throughout the series before discussing how he's going to teach the modal approach in this lesson. James keeps things nice and simple in this lesson so you can easily pick up what you need to, explaining some of the different modes you'll use before demonstrating how to play all the notes. By the end of this lesson you'll be well into practising all of these great sounding scales and be ready to move on further into Minor 2,5,1's Series 3.
In lesson two, Scales in Context, you'll take the scales learned in the first lesson and begin playing them with the backing track playing. This will help you learn how each scale and note sounds in context and give you some great techniques and ideas for playing amazing sounding improvisations on your saxophone. James revisits and practices the scales first of all, but you'll soon have the backing track on and be playing these great sounding scales in context. James talks through and plays the scales himself before leaving space for you to join in and play them yourself.
Lesson three, titled B7 b9 and #9, sees you move onto looking at playing around the B7 chord. This will involve playing around the sharp and flat 9 as the title of the lesson suggests, and again is adding many more options for you when it comes to improvising yourself. These are all great notes to get under your fingers, and James explains in great detail how to play them before demonstrating them for your understanding. Practice yourself while James talks you through this series and get ready for the next lesson.
Lesson four is called Resolution. In this lesson James will take you through how to travel from the notes learned in lesson three to E minor, using notes from the G major scale. This lesson has a simple structure; James will talk you through everything you need to know and are going to play before the backing track goes on and you're playing along with James guiding you every step of the way.
In lesson five, titled Licks and Language, James moves onto teaching you some specific licks that fit into the Minor 2,5,1's structure and will highlight further opportunities for adding to your personal saxophone repertoire. In this lesson James is straight into playing the licks, as usual talking you through each lick one step at a time to ensure you know exactly what you need to do. The licks you'll learn here include the use of arpeggios and some other techniques that may be familiar to you already. Get the backing track on and get practising these brilliant sax licks.
Lesson six of Minor 2,5,1's Series 3 is called Modal Playtime. This lesson is all about rounding off everything you have learned during this series and having some fun as you play around with James. You'll put the backing track on and play your Modal Scales while James plays along with you and guides you through. James opens the lesson with a brief recap of the Modal Scales you visited in lessons one and two, as well as touching on some of the other learnings and tips from Minor 2,5,1's Series 3. This is an informative, fun end to another terrific series from James Morton.
